Annual Events

Join us for these School and/or PTA events, which are designed to entertain, educate and build relationships among the Dahlia Heights community.  Only a few of these events are fundraisers. Volunteers make Dahlia Heights a special place for all our children. Volunteers are needed and greatly appreciated at Dahlia. We encourage you to get involved.

For the latest on upcoming school events, including dates, times, and volunteer opportunities, sign up for the weekly Dahlia PTA newsletter at www.dahliapta.org.

Annual School Functions & Events

Back To School Night: Back to School Night is an opportunity for parents to meet with their child’s teachers in the classroom to discuss the academic goals set for the coming year. Held in September, this event is for parents and teachers ONLY. No childcare is available.

Book Fair: In addition to the opportunity to purchase great books for the entire family, you can also help build classroom libraries through the fair. Our teachers will select books for their "wish lists," which you can purchase and donate to the classroom to enrich students for years to come.  This is a school fundraiser held annually at the end of January.

Career Day: Career Day exposes students (4th-6th grades) to a myriad of career choices and helps them connect the essential skills they are learning now with a possible future career.  Eighteen volunteers share their career experiences working in their particular fields. This is usually held in April.

Conferences: Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled periodically by the teacher to discuss each child's progress and review test data. You may request a conference whenever you feel there is a need to do so.  Parent Conferences are scheduled for a week in the fall and spring. One conference each year is led by the child.

Earth Day: A family event held in April featuring environmental education, recycled arts and crafts projects, and environmentally-friendly fundraisers.

Culmination Breakfast: This special farewell breakfast is held for 6th graders and Dahlia Heights’ staff ONLY on the second to last day of school.

Culmination and awards ceremony for 6th graders:  Held on the last day of school. It is followed by a Reception for 6th graders and their families.

Guest Speaker Lecture Series: Presentations by guest lecturers on a variety of topics, presented by the PTA. We invite you to join the PTA, attend meetings, and provide input into which topics would be most helpful to you. If you have a suggestion for a topic you’d like to learn more about, please tell the PTA President or email [email protected].

Halloween Parade: All classes participate in this costume parade for parents and family members.  Any preschool age children who are in costume will also be invited to walk in the Parade. Prizes are distributed to children with the most creative costumes.

Harvest Festival: A fun-filled after-school fundraising event with games, crafts and food for the kids.

Holiday Boutique: Held by the 6th grade parents in conjunction with the Winter Performance. It features holiday gift items as well as food and drinks for sale.

Holiday Luncheon: The PTA hosts this lunch prepared by volunteers to honor and thank the teachers and staff.

Ice Cream Social: Held in the beginning of the school year, this fun event allows families to mix and mingle over ice cream while learning about extracurricular activities at Dahlia, opportunities for parent involvement, and general information pertaining to the upcoming school year.

Kindergarten Orientation: Held a few days to a week before the start of the school year. At orientation, parents and students will meet the school principal, kindergarten teachers, and other school staff members.  There are fun activities for children and an opportunity for parents to ask questions about the school’s procedures and programs. Kindergarten orientation is an opportunity to:

  • See your new School and meet the staff and PTA members

  • Get Help with Enrollment Forms

  • Learn more about the School and PTA

  • Meet other Families

New Family Orientation (Grades 1-6): Held at 8:00 AM on the first day of school each year for new transfer students.

Open House: Held in the spring, Open House is a chance for you and your child(ren) to visit the classroom to view students projects and talk informally with your child's teacher. It’s also an opportunity to visit your child’s possible future teachers and their classrooms. The PTA also holds a Silent Auction fundraiser in the auditorium.

Silent Auction: The PTA also holds a Silent Auction fundraiser in the Spring.

Orchestra Assembly: The instrumental music groups put on a performance for students and parents usually in May each year.

Prospective Parent Tour: Tour the school and learn about Dahlia Heights from its Principal, teachers, students, and parents.

Read-A-Palooza Pledge Drive: This fundraiser is kicked off in January and extends into February. Families and the community pledge to support a child with monetary gifts for every hour of reading done. This event benefits the library.

Teacher Appreciation Week: A week of honoring the staff and teachers in May, with parents donating a variety of food related items and hosting a sit-down lunch.

Volunteer Appreciation Tea: The Staff and Teachers serve parent volunteers a meal and recognize outstanding volunteers at this daytime event in June, while students entertain them.

Walk-A-Thon: Sixth graders recruit individual sponsors to support them as they walk around the Rose Bowl on a Saturday in March or April to raise money for their end-of-year class trip.

Winter Performance: Each December, classes serenade their families at the Holiday Concert. The 6th grade parents hold a Holiday Boutique outside featuring festive gifts and crafts, as well as food and drinks.
